If you are planing to paint your home and would like to know how to choose the right colours, please have a look at our Guide. No matter if it is for interior or exterior you should do a really good research and also try some samples before you start painting your home. Sometimes the same colour could look totally different on two different house.

There are hundreds and hundreds of colours available today and it is not an easy thing to pick one. The first thing you want to do is go to your local paint store and have a look at some brochures and colour samples on their wall. They are pretty good for a start, brochures have many sample colours in them as well with pictures. Take it home and try to imagine how would your home look like if you would pick that particular colour. It is also recommended to cut out the sample from the brochure. Too many colours in one small brochure could be confusing for the eye. Put that sample next to your wall. See how it looks like. Please keep in mind that every colour looks different under different light conditions. For example if you have a look at a colour under bright sunlight, it will be totally different then under neon or other lights you may have in your home. Try to put the sample onto different walls. Usually bedrooms have only one or two windows so they are much darker then your living area or kitchen. You also have to make sure that the chosen colours will match you furniture, curtains and blinds you already have in your home.

You can also visit the website of the chosen brand or your local paint store. They usually have all their colours on their website. It is also possible to search for a colour by name or style. It is important that the colours could be different on your screen then in real life. Every computer is different and has different screen resolution, etc... So even if you pick a colour online, always go into the store and double check it! It can be helpful in some cases though.

Once you have a rough idea what colour you would like to use in your home you can do a research on google. Google is a really good search engine. It can be used to search photos from all over the world. Simply type the name of the colour (and/or product name) into the field and browse through the thousands of pictures which has been uploaded by other people who have used the same colour in their home. Always try to look for a similar size and type of home that you have. Sometimes it can also be confusing when the previously picked colour look good on a two story house but not so good a small single story house. The same thing applies when the preferred colour looks perfect in a huge living room but looks different in a smaller bedroom. So that you have an idea how would the chosen colour would look like in your home you can go back to your local paint store and purchase some sample pots.

Sample pots are also a really good thing to try before you start painting. They can be purchased from any local paint store for a small amount. Take it home and apply it with a small brush. Please keep in mind that you try the sample colour on 3-4 different places depending on the light conditions. If you are not 100% happy with the chosen colour take your time and look for more. Sometimes you do not need to pick another colour, simply try "Half Strength", Quarter Strength" or "Double Strength" of the same colour. It will be exactly the same except lighter or darker shade. Some people use both when they are painting their home. For example they use "Hog Bristle - Half Strength" in their living area and/or bigger, lighter areas and use "Hog Bristle - Quarter Strength" in their bedroom and/or smaller, darker rooms. In the meantime they will look the same.

For the Interior Ceiling most people prefer plain White. Be careful when your are doing plain white ceilings. Factory White Ceiling Paints does not cover as good as tinted ceiling paints. If you prefer white, stick to it! It might need an extra coat of paint but you will get a much better result. Plain White Ceilings always look nicer and cleaner then tinted ceilings. When you are hiring a contractor to do the job for you make sure you tell him. Many cases they tint the ceiling paint by putting a small amount of black tint in it so it will cover better and also makes the job easier for them. Unfortunately they usually say it is plain white but it is not and you won't even notice it unless you do a colour match. On a big area it is hard to tell if it is tinted or not but as soon as you put some white item (A4 Copy Paper) near it you will notice the difference.

Using two or more different colours in a home is very popular. Some people prefer to use more then one colour in their home, some people don't. It is your personal choice that you have to make yourself. If you are planing to use two different colours make sure you do a really good research and try the samples before you start painting. Some colours perfectly match with each other, some colours just don't.

Usually people prefer to use a different colour on the Interior Woodwork (Doors, Door Frames, Windows & Skirting Boards). Some people prefer "Half" or "Double Strength" of the Wall colour and some people just prefer plain white. They use the same colour but a different shade so they will match perfectly with each other. The best solution is to check out some pictures of previously painted homes and also have a look at your friends, family member's home. Even if you like two colours you have to make sure that you are 100% happy with it and you love those colours. In the end that is your home that you would like to paint. You spend most of the time in that place because you live there.

The same thing applies for the feature walls. If you are planing to paint a feature wall in your living area always try the sample first. It has to match with the walls, frames and also with the furniture, curtains and blinds you already have. Also important that you have only one feature wall in one area. More then one feature wall could be confusing and there is a chance they won't match with the rest of the place unless you are using the same colour on them.

No matter if it is for Interior, Exterior, Deck Restoration, Roof Respray or Feature Wall, you can use the same methods to choose the right colours for your home.
