If you are planing to do a deck restoration and thinking about doing it yourself, please have a look at our easy to follow Step by Step DIY Guide. In the following example we are going to show you how to apply the protective coating on the deck, and what are the best products to work with.

There are many type of products available in the market today but in the following example we are going to use SIKKENS Products. It is an excellent quality product and will last longer then any other, cheaper materials. We use SIKKENS Cetol HLS for the first coat and SIKKENS Cetol Deck for the final top coat. SIKKENS Cetol Deck was designed for timber floor, deck and steps where you have traffic. It is UV and Water Resistant. SIKKENS also has a Non-Slip version product for timber floors and decking. It is called SIKKENS Cetol Deck Plus. They are both available in various colours such as Natural, Mahogany, Pine, Redwood, etc...

If you are planing to recoat the previously stained (protective coated) deck, you might need to sand the floor with Belt Sander & Edge Sander Machines. They are both available to hire so you do not need to spend so much money on purchasing the machines.

(Please note that some products (other brand name product) cannot be applied on top of other products otherwise they will peal off by time. In some cases you might need to sand the surface back to bare timber before you can apply the first coat.)

Deck Restoration:
  Step 1:
Clean the surface of the Deck using a High Pressure Cleaner Machine. The best Machine to use is a petrol high pressure cleaner at least 2400 psi. Simply use it on the entire surface including any steps you have. Be careful with the machine and try not to damage the timber. Let it dry completely.
  Step 2:
If you have nailheads sticking out of the surface, you need to fix them by punching every single one of them back where they were originally. If you miss one it may rip the sandpaper off the Belt Sander & Edge Sander Machines so make sure you do not miss any.
  Step 3:
Sand the surface of the floor and steps using Belt Sander and Edge Sander Machines. Make sure you use the machine in the direction of the wood grain! There are some areas where the machine cannot fit. Simply sand those areas by hand. Once it has been sanded, clean the surface of the floor and steps. Simply use a broom and an old paint brush.
  Step 4:
Wash the surface with Moisture Killer. Diggers has a a Timber Cleaner which is perfect for timber floors. Simply mix the product with water and wash the entire area. Once you have done that, wash the surface with clean water using a garden hose or pressure cleaner (no more then 600 psi). Let it dry completely.
  Step 5:
Clean the surface of the floor and steps. Simply use a broom, old paint brush and a rag. The surface has to be completely dust free so give it a really good clean. Also clean any items around the deck; lights, glass fence, etc...
  Step 6:
It is time to apply the SIKKENS Cetol HLS. This product will give a colour to the previously sanded floor. Several colours are available such as pine, mahogany, redwood, natural, etc... Apply the product with a brush and staining pad (apply it in the direction of the wood grain). Never put too much on the surface at a time. Try to apply it evenly. Once you have done one coat let it dry. Usually two separate coats of HLS required to reach the preferred colour. Apply the second coat by following the same method. Once you have done the second coat let it dry again.
  Step 7:
It is time to apply the SIKKENS Cetol Deck. Before you apply the product clean the surface. It has to be completely dust free. Once you are happy with the surface you can apply the final coat. Simply apply the product with a brush. Always apply it in the direction of the wood grain. Let it dry for 24 hours. Two separate coats are recommended for better protection so apply the second coat on the next day using the same method as before.
