Repaint: |
|
| Step 1: |
|
|
Clean the surface of every
Ceilings, Walls and Woodwork (Windows, Doors, Door
Frames and Skirting Boards). Simply use a broom, an old
paint brush and a cloth to remove any dust from the
surfaces.
|
|
| Step 2: |
|
|
Cover the floor (any
furniture) with drop sheets and plastic drop sheets. Use
masking tape around the kitchen cabinet to avoid the
sheets falling off while you are working. Make sure the
whole area is covered, you don't need any accident.
|
|
| Step 3: |
|
|
Remove any unwanted items from
the ceilings, walls and woodwork (hooks, nails, screws,
etc). Remove the door handles and store it in a safe
place. It will make your job easier later on. Also
remove all the covers of the power points and switches.
Remove any curtains, tracks and/or blinds if there is
any.
|
|
| Step 4: |
|
|
Repair any damages on the
Ceilings, Walls and Woodwork:
Scrape off any loose, pealing paint if there is any
(including water damaged areas).
Use Interior Flexible Gap Sealant (Polyfilla) to fix any gaps
you may have on the Ceilings and Cornices. Also use the
same material to fill any gaps around the Windows, Door
Frames and Skirting Boards.
Use Interior Plaster Filler on the small cracks,
marks, holes, nail holes, dents and any other damages on
all Ceilings and Walls. Use Corner Cement on the bigger
damages. The Plaster Filler can be applied by Filling
Blades. You may also need to re-tape some bigger cracks
on the surfaces. It is also an easy process. Just stick
the plastering tape onto the damaged surface and apply
the Corner Cement on it using your blades. Sometimes it
also required to apply a second coat of filler to create
a smooth surface. The second coat of filler is usually
Interior Plaster Filler (Smooth Filler).
Use Interior Timber Filler to fix, repair any holes,
nail holes, marks, dents and damages on the
Woodwork.
|
|
| Step 5: |
|
|
If you had any water damaged
area in your home it is time to take care of it. Use
Zinsser B.I.N Primer Sealer (Stain Killer) on the
previously water damaged areas. Give it some time to
dry. It is always better to apply 2 separate coats if
the surface is badly damaged. Once it is dry fix the
damage by using Interior Plaster Filler or Corner
Cement.
|
|
| Step 6: |
|
|
If you moved / removed any
lights, fans or other items, use the same method
explained in "Step 4" to fix their place.
Depending on the size of the whole it might need taping.
|
|
| Step 7: |
|
|
Once you have all the surface
fixed, it is ready for sanding. Use a Sanding Block and
Sandpaper and sand the previously repaired patches by
hand. Also you need to sand every single window, door,
door frame and skirting board by hand. Use 80-120
sandpaper to complete the job. Sand all the walls
including inside of the cupboards and any hidden walls.
The walls can be sanded with a sander attached to a
pole.
|
|
| Step 8: |
|
|
Remove any drop sheets and
clean the entire house by using a broom, an old paint
brush and cloth. Once you have done that it is better to
vacuum the whole place to make sure every corner is dust
free and ready for painting. You can put the clean drop
sheets, plastic drop sheets back to their places. Make
sure you did not miss a spot and everything is covered!
|
|
| Step 9: |
|
|
The place is ready for
painting. The first thing to paint is the Ceilings!
Always start with the Ceilings! It will make your job a
lot easier later on. Pick a good paint brush and
roller from the local paint store. Never pick the
cheapest because you won't be able to do quality job
with cheap materials. Purdy is the best quality brand
all over the world. Stick to it! Even if it would cost
you more you will get a much better end product. Ok, now
it is time to start painting. If you have any new
plasterboard ceilings or walls, make sure you use an
undercoat on the surface before you apply the top coats!
DULUX Professional Acrylic Sealer Undercoat will do the
job.
PAINT THE CEILINGS:
DULUX Professional Tintable (Flat) Ceiling Paint
Paint the cornices with the brush. Do the same thing
around the lights, fans and things you may have on the
ceilings. Once you are done with one room, roll the
ceilings using a roller. Check the surface for any
missed spots! If you missed, just simply go over again
with your roller. Move to the next room and so on until
you put one coat on every single ceiling in the house.
Once you have done one coat make sure that you are happy
with everything. Check for any missed spots and damages.
There shouldn't be any as you have done the preparation
work before. If you still find anything, go back and fix
it. Preparation is the most important thing in painting.
If you do not fix the problem now, you will have
problems later on. Also you want to have a quality job
done. When you are happy with everything apply the
second coat of paint. Use the same method and move from
room to room until you have finished the whole house.
Sometimes the ceilings needs three separate coats of
paint depending on the chosen colour and also on the
previous colour.
DULUX has a product called DULUX Wash & Wear
Kitchen & Bathroom Low Sheen. It is a premium low
sheen paint specifically developed for kitchens,
bathrooms and laundries. With Mouldshield® +
Anti-Bacterial technology it is moisture, mould and
bacteria resistant. It's also a low VOC Eco Choice paint
which means it's low odour and is more friendly for our
environment. Feel free to use it in the kitchen and
bathroom to gain a better
result.
|
|
| Step 10: |
|
|
UNDERCOAT THE WOODWORK:
DULUX Professional Quick Drying (Oil Based)
Undercoat
Using an undercoat is a must! Always use undercoat on
a previously painted (glossed) woodwork. Even if you apply the same colour as before you need to apply
one coat of undercoat before putting on the final gloss
finish. Not using an undercoat will cause you problems
in the future. (If you apply enamel paint on top of the
previously painted surface it will peel off by time. It
may last for months or a few years, but after a while it
will peel off and you will have trouble removing it.)
Dulux has two different type of undercoat for the
woodwork: oil based and water based. There are no major
differences between the two product. At Gold Coast
Master Painters we prefer using the oil based undercoat
but it is your personal choice which one you will use.
They are also perfect for undercoating new timber or
previously stained timber. So once you have the product,
start painting the windows, door frames and skirting
boards using your brush. Use a smaller roller on the
doors. (Depending on the type of the door.) Always use a
roller on the flat doors to create a smooth, even
finish. If you use a brush you will have brush marks
which you will see after you put on the final gloss
finish. Paint all the doors, door frames, windows and
skirting boards including inside of the cupboards.
|
|
| Step 11: |
|
|
PAINT THE WALLS:
DULUX Wash & Wear Interior (Low Sheen) Paint
It is time to paint the walls. We usually use
Interior Low Sheen for the walls but it is also
available in Flat and Semi-Gloss. Low Sheen has a bit of
shine and also easy to maintain / clean. Start in one
room and use your brush to paint around the windows,
door frames, power points, switches and around other
items you may have on the walls. Try to make a nice
straight line on the tops (Ceilings). Use masking tape
if necessary to mask the ceilings (Cornices) to avoid
any splashes. Masking the Cornices bottom edge can also
be used as a "guide" to create a straight
line. Always use a good quality of masking tape (Blue)
because cheaper tapes could cause damage to your freshly
painted ceilings. Even if the ceilings are dry
cheaper tapes could cause damage and rip the paint off
when you are trying to remove the tape. It is also
important that you never leave your masking tape on the
surface for a long time. Do not wait weeks to remove it!
Always remove the tape as soon as possible to avoid any
damages. Once you have the room painted use your roller
to roll the walls. First coat is done. Move to the next
room and use the same method explained before. Keep
going until you have one coat of every single wall in
your home. Sometimes you have to use a small roller or
brush to paint the walls inside of the cupboards. That
is normal. Also everywhere else where you were unable to
fit your brush before (example: above the air
condition). Once you have done one coat make sure that
you are happy with everything. Check for any missed
spots and damages. There shouldn't be any as you have
done the preparation work before. If you still find
anything, go back and fix it. Again! Preparation is the
most important thing in painting. If you do not fix the
problem now, you will have problems later on. Also you
want to have a quality job done. When you are happy with
everything, apply the second coat of paint. Use the same
method and move from room to room until you have
finished the whole house. Sometimes the walls needs
three separate coats of paint depending on the chosen
colour and also on the previous colour. (Darker colours
have better coverage then lighter colours.)
DULUX has a product called DULUX Wash & Wear
Kitchen & Bathroom Low Sheen. It is a premium low
sheen paint specifically developed for kitchens,
bathrooms and laundries. With Mouldshield® +
Anti-Bacterial technology it is moisture, mould and
bacteria resistant. It's also a low VOC Eco Choice paint
which means it's low odour and is more friendly for our
environment. Feel free to use it in the kitchen and
bathroom to gain a better
result.
|
|
| Step 12: |
|
|
APPLY GLOSS FINISH ON
WOODWORK:
DULUX Super Enamel Interior (High Gloss) Paint
Super Enamel is available in Semi Gloss and High Gloss. It is totally up to you which one you prefer.
Semi Gloss is similar to the Low Sheen on the walls.
High Gloss is the shiny one. It also depends what
colour you will use to finish the project. Sometimes one
looks better then the other. Ok, so once you have
decided which one you will use, it is time to paint the
woodwork. Start in one room and use your brush to paint
the windows, door frames and skirting boards. Try to
apply the paint evenly to create a smooth finish. Make
sure you do not have any runs in the corners. Also
important that you DO NOT over thin your paint! Use
masking tape if necessary to mask any surfaces to avoid
any splashes. Always use a good quality of masking tape
(Blue). Once you have the room painted use your roller
to roll the doors. (Depending on the type of the door.)
Always use a roller on the flat doors to create a
smooth, even finish. If you use a brush you will have
brush marks which you will see after. Paint all the
doors, door frames, windows and skirting boards
including inside of the cupboards until you have every
one of them painted in the house. When it is all
finished give it some time to dry. Please note that
there is a difference between a touch dry and a fully
dry surface. The Gloss Finish will be dry in a few hours
but you still have to wait at least 24-48 hours before
you can put the door handles and other items back to
their places. If you do not wait until it is fully dry
you may damage the freshly painted surface. The same
thing applies when you are putting down new carpets.
Always leave it dry for 24-48 hours. Never organise the
carpet onto the next day!
|
|
| Step 13: |
|
|
Remove all the drop sheets and
plastic drop sheets. Put the door handles, all the
covers of the power points and switches back to their
original place. Put the curtains, tracks and/or blinds
back to their places if there were any. Now you have a
fully painted home.
