If you are planing to paint your kitchen cabinet and thinking about doing it yourself, please have a look at our easy to follow Step by Step DIY Guide. In the following example we are going to show you how to repaint your laminated kitchen cabinet, and what are the best products to work with.

We are going to use DULUX and Zinsser Products. Zinsser B.I.N Primer Sealer is a stain killer for water damaged areas. If you have a water damage, feel free to use it as a primer to block any stain coming through again. It can also be used as a primer on laminate, glass or any other smooth surfaces. It will stick to any surface even laminated kitchen cabinets. Once you have a perfect undercoat use Dulux brand as a top coat. Dulux is the best quality product available today in the painting industry. It is the leading brand in Australia. They have a huge range of products for interior use. Dulux Super Enamel Interior Paint is a really good product to apply on the laminated kitchen cabinets. It is hard enough to avoid any scratches and also washable. It can be maintained easily and will last longer then any other materials. It is available in Semi Gloss and High Gloss Finish. Many homes have Laminated, Plastic or Mirror Sliding Doors in the bedroom. Feel free to use the same products if you would like to paint them as well.

There is also another product on the market which is perfect for Kitchen Cabinets. It is a bit more cost effective but the end result will be better. Norglass Weatherfast Marine Varnish comes in many colours such as White, Pearl White, etc... It is an Ultra High Gloss Finish which is similar to the 2Pac. Norglass Weatherfast Pri-COAT can be applied on the surface as an undercoat. It is a really good primer. These products can be applied the same way as the Enamel.

Instead of using Enamel or Marine Varnish, 2Pac Finish can be applied on the surface. 2Pac can be sprayed on the surface using a spray gun, but it is a completely different process. 2Pak is also available to purchase in a Spray Can at some local paint stores. It has a short lifetime though and hard to work with. Enamel is the most cost effective process and can be applied by anyone easily. This is what we are going to show you in the following example.

Kitchen Cabinet Restoration:
  Step 1:
Remove any knob, door handle and any other parts you may have. Put them in a safe place. If you are replacing them with a new one make sure that they will fit before you paint the surface. Also remove the doors and any shelf. It will make your job easier later on.
  Step 2:
Cover the floor with drop sheets and plastic drop sheets. Use masking tape on the areas which you do not want to paint. Also mask any glass if you have any. Make sure the whole area is covered before you start, you don't need any accident.
  Step 3:
Clean the surface of Kitchen Cabinet including every single part (Glass, Bench Top, Shelf, Etc...). Simply use a cloth to remove any dust from the surfaces. Methylated Spirit can be used to remove any oil or sticky tape. Diggers Methylated Spirit is a really good quality product and will do the job for you.
  Step 4:
Repair any damages on the Kitchen Cabinet:

Use Body Filler or Timber Filler to fix, repair any unwanted holes, marks, scratches and damages on the Kitchen Cabinet. Wait until it is fully dry and sand them carefully.

Clean the surface again using a cloth. Give it a really good clean because it has to be completely dust free. Use a vacuum cleaner if needed.

  Step 5:
Once all the preparations are done it is time to apply the first coat. Apply the Zinsser B.I.N Primer Sealer (Stain Killer) on the surface. Pick a good paint brush and roller from the local paint store. Never pick the cheapest because you won't be able to do quality job with cheap materials. Purdy is the best quality brand all over the world. Stick to it! Even if it would cost you more you will get a much better result. Use a sponge roller to complete the job. It will create a smooth finish. (If you use a normal roller, you will have texture in the final product.) Apply the Primer with the brush and roller. Try to apply it evenly. Do not put too much on the surface. Let it dry.
  Step 6:
Once you have primed all the surfaces including door, shelf and any other parts it is time to apply the first coat of enamel. Apply the Super Enamel with a brush and roller, using the same method as before. Do not put too much at a time! Once you have done with all the parts let it dry. Apply the second coat of enamel on the next day using the same method. Please keep in mind that there is a difference between a touch dry and a fully dry surface. The Gloss Finish will be dry in a few hours but you still have to wait at least 24-48 hours before you can put the door handles and other items back to their places. If you do not wait until it is fully dry you may damage the freshly painted surface.
