If you are planing to apply stain and/or protection clear coat on any timber and thinking about doing it yourself, please have a look at our easy to follow Step by Step DIY Guide. In the following example we are going to show you how to stain and use clear protection coat on a brand new timber front door, and what are the best products to work with.

There are many type of products available in the market today but in the following example we are going to use SIKKENS Products. It is an excellent quality product and will last longer then any other, cheaper materials. We use SIKKENS Cetol HLS for the first coat and SIKKENS Cetol Filter 7 for the final top coat. Please keep in mind that SIKKENS Cetol Filter 7 in not suitable for walk-on & sit-on surfaces. It cannot be applied on timber floors or deck where you have traffic. It can be used as a top coat on any other items such as doors, frames, windows or any other timber surfaces. It is UV and water resistant.

If you are planing to do a previously stained (protective coated) front door or any other timber, you can use the same products but it is a completely different process. Some products cannot be applied on top of other products otherwise they will peal off by time. You need to make sure that you do a really good research before you start a project like that. In some cases you might need to sand the surface back to bare timber before you can apply the first coat of HLS. We cannot make a guide for doing such thing because every door is different, and different products were applied on them.

Staining (New Timber Front Door):
  Step 1:
Clean the surface of the Door and Door Frame. Simply use an old paint brush and a cloth to remove any dust from the surfaces. Also clean the glass if you have any on the door.
  Step 2:
Cover the floor with drop sheets. Use masking tape if required to mask any glass or door handle. Make sure the whole area is covered before you start, you don't need any accident.
  Step 3:
Sand the surface of the door and door frame including the edges with 220 sandpaper. Make sure you sand them in the direction of the wood grain! Once it has been sanded, clean the surface of the door and door frame using your old paint brush and cloth. It has to be completely dust free. Use a vacuum cleaner if needed!
  Step 4:
It is time to apply the SIKKENS Cetol HLS. This product will give a colour to the door and door frame. Several colours are available such as pine, mahogany, rosewood, natural, etc... Apply the product with a brush (it is always better to brush it in the direction of the wood grain). Start with the back edge. Use a rag and wipe the surface, it will even the product on the door or door frame. Once you have done one coat let it dry. Usually two separate coats of HLS required to reach the colour you wanted. Apply the second coat by following the same method. Please remember that you need to sand the surface between each coat. It only needs a really light sand. Once you have done with the second coat let it dry again. Use "Coloured" Timber Putty and fill the holes (nail holes) if there is any. (Coloured putty can be purchased at your local store or can be mixed by you using natural "plain" timber putty and tint.)
  Step 5:
If you are happy with the colour it is time to use the SIKKENS Cetol Filter 7. Before you apply the product sand the surface of the door and door frame. Also check the previously puttied holes (nail holes) and make sure you did not miss any. Clean the door and door frame again. It has to be completely dust free. Once you are happy with the surface you can apply the final coat. Simply apply the product with a brush. Always brush it in the direction of the wood grain. Let it dry for 24 hours. Two separate coats are recommended for better protection so apply the second coat on the next day using the same method as before.
  Step 6:
Remove any drop sheets and masking tape from the glass and door handle.
